ONCE UPON A TIME, a woman in Rochester joined with several other families to begin a program for children with multiple disabilities.
Mary Pulvino Cariola was frustrated that no local program would accept her nephew, Butchie. Everybody had a reason not to welcome him and not to include him, so she abandoned her Florida retirement plans in 1949 and took on the challenge.
Beginning with a class of six students, Mary worked for the next 40 years to build an agency that was later named in her honor and now serves more than 650 students with disabilities each year.
Her idea was that the children always come first - and we are proud to say that the same philosophy endures today.
The stories of the children and families at Mary Cariola are about courage and optimism in the face of challenges. They touch your heart. For our staff, the stories focus on dedication, creativity and going the extra mile. We see it every day, and so do the parents of our children:
Thank you for all of your patience and warmth you give every day. We appreciate your
effort, expertise, and most of all the positive energy that always seems to radiate. Thanks
for
making learning seem like play for Abigail.
