Summary
Working under the supervision of the Supervising Teacher and the direction of the Classroom Teacher, has responsibility for assisting the Classroom Teacher in day-to-day educational activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilites
Sensitivity to cultural diversity of others Carries out assigned, individualized, educational and therapeutic programs both within and outside the classroom setting including: necessary lifting, moving, positioning; gross motor; fine motor; range of motion; self care; communication; therapeutic feeding; cognitive; prevocational; ADL; adaptive PE; behavior management programs; data collection system; reinforcement systems Assists in creating and maintaining a positive educational atmosphere including the health, medical and safety concerns of the students. Respectfully interacts with students in age-appropriate manner, maintaining their right for privacy and confidentiality at all times. Upon completion of structured activities, demonstrates initiative, maintaining an effective level of interaction with students during transition. Handles and utilizes student equipment appropriately. Assists in maintenance and care of classroom, equipment and materials. Provides classroom teacher with general information and observations concerning the students' needs, behavior and performance. Assists in the design and development of classroom materials and projects including daily preparations involving setting up and putting away. Effectively and appropriately interact and communicate with classroom and professional team members. Assists in creating and maintaining positive work relationships. Actively participates in the pool program. In the absence of the Teacher, insures effective classroom programming, including: implementation of programs; direction of classroom staff; decisions regarding staff assignments and classroom schedules and activities; report issues/information to teacher, supervisor or other professional team members; completes daily/weekly records. Implements and directs classroom programs/activities with individual, small and large groups of students. Assists the Teacher with the training, direction and supervision of TAI's, Substitute Aides and Classroom Volunteers. Communicates effectively with parents and caregivers. Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and three (3) to six (6) months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Math Skills
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Other Skills
Must have the ability and temperament to work effectively with students who have multiple disabilities, including behavioral challenges.
