Summary
Working under the supervision of the Coordinating Teacher and the direction of the Summer Teacher, has responsibility for assistnig the Summer teacher in day-to-day educational activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilites
Sensitivity to cultural diversity of others Carries out assigned, individualized, educational and therapeutic programs both within and outside the classroom setting including: necessary lifting, moving, positioning; gross motor; fine motor; range of motion; self care; communication; therapeutic feeding; cognitive; prevocational; ADL; adaptive PE; behavior management programs; data collection system; reinforcement systems. Carries out individual and small group activities under the direction of teacher/designee. Assists in creating and maintaining a positive educational atmosphere including health, medical and safety concerns of the students. Respectfully interacts with students in an age-appropriate manner, maintaining their right to privacy and confidentiality at all times. Upon completion of structured activities, demonstrates initiative and maintains an effective level of interaction with students during transition. Handles and utilizes student equipment appropriately. Assists in the maintenance and care of the classroom, classroom equipment and student equipment. Actively participates in the pool program. Provides classroom Teacher with general information and observations concerning the students' needs, behavior and performance. Effectively and appropriately interacts and communicates with classroom and professional team members. Assists in creating and maintaining positive work relationships. Assists in the preparation of classroom projects and materials including setting up and putting away. Carries out any other classroom related activities directed by the teacher, clinician, or designee.

Supervisory Responsibilities


Qualifications
Whereas there are no specific educational resuirements associated witht he position, a minimum of a high school education is recommended. Ability and temperament to work effectively with mentally retarded, physically handicapped children is a necessity.

Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.

Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Math Skills
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
