Summary
Working under the direct administrative supervision of the Director of Community Services and the clinical supervision of the Residential Lead Nurse, the Residential Nurse is responsible for the delivery, coordination and maintenance of any medical services for the individuals who reside in the home as directed by each individual’s Primary Care Physician and in accordance with the Director of Community Services and/or Medical Director. In addition, the Residential Nurse is also responsible for implementing and maintaining programmatic health and safety procedures and some staff training.
Essential Duties and Responsibilites
Sensitivity to cultural diversity of others
Maintains accurate and up-to-date health information files on all children.
Notes in the Communication Book and in the child’s record the reason for that child’s limitations regarding swimming or other recreational programming.
Processes and files a copy of a child’s Incident/Accident report.
Administers medically prescribed medications to children.
Maintains medical cabinet with all medically approved medications, supplies and equipment.
Physically examines and determines health status for children on a regular basis as brought to their attention.
Accompanies residents to clinic and dental visits as needed.
Coordinates the dental and clinic services, makes service reports in the child’s official file, and is available to appropriate staff for consultation.
Reviews and records monthly doctor’s orders, reviewing and filing monthly med sheets including control drug sheets, home med sheets and key transfer.
Ensures that all medical emergency procedures are implemented as written.
Monitors the general health and safety standards used and applied within the Residential Program setting.
Participates on an Interdisciplinary Treatment Team to establish and implement appropriate therapeutic objecting and related programming.
Attends all case reviews and maintains accurate and current records on each child, reporting on-going progress and needs to the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team.
Chairs and assumes responsibility for Safety Committee.
Attends all staff meetings, and schedule and provide in-service training sessions for residential staff.
Is responsible to provide and accurately record any medications for school/day treatment programs with school/day treatment program nursing staff.
Develops and updates specific medication information.
Is available to staff when possible on an on-call basis for any medical information.
Is responsible to see that there is an appropriate and current written nursing services plan for each resident and that personal hygiene and grooming programs are established for each resident.
Monitors control of communicable diseases and infections, through identification and assessment, reporting to medical authorities, and implementation of appropriate protective and preventative measures.
Develops and updates a medication course in compliance with State guidelines so that non-medical residential personnel may be certified to administer medications.
Is responsible to see that direct care residential staff receive training in detecting signs of illness or dysfunction that warrant medical or nursing intervention. Basic skills required to meet the health needs and problems of the residents, first aid and other needed health areas.
Oversees employees who are certified to pass medications, provides medication re-certification on an annual basis and medication in-service sessions as needed.
Supervises the Med Liaison.
Monitors and maintains accurate data on staff required health testing mandated by the Department of Health.
Maintains CPR and First Aid Instructor certification as requested by the Director of Community Services.
Other duties may be assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises 1-2 employees in Medical Liaison. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four year college or university in nursing, or one to two years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Math Skills
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
