Discovering each child's potential

Jakequan Learns to Cook

Jakequan LakePizza is a favorite for 16-year-old Jakequan.  He mastered the art of making it from scratch in a cooking group that is part of Mary Cariola’s Transition Program at the East Henrietta campus.  His teachers say Jakequan is proud of his new cooking skills, especially learning to make pizza dough.

Jakequan says his proudest accomplishments at Mary Cariola are playing in the Special Olympics Basketball event and participating in flag football at Total Sports Experience. He says playing with the other guys is competitive, but that it has improved his sportsmanship skills.  He has learned that by taking himself out of the game for a few minutes he is able to refocus and play better.

Jakequan has hopes of having a job one day and living independently.  With his cooking abilities, increased self-confidence and a growing maturity, he is well on the way to achieving those dreams.
