ONCE UPON A TIME, a woman in Rochester joined with several other families to begin a program for children with multiple disabilities.
Mary Pulvino Cariola was frustrated that no local program would accept her nephew, Butchie. Everybody had a reason not to welcome
him and not to include him, so she abandoned her Florida retirement plans in 1949 and took on the challenge.
Beginning with a class of six students, Mary worked for the next 40 years to build an agency that was later named in her honor and now serves more than 650 students with disabilities each year.
Her idea was that the children always come first - and we are proud to say that the same philosophy endures today.
The stories of the children and families at Mary Cariola are about courage and optimism in the face of challenges. They touch your heart. For our staff, the stories focus on dedication, creativity and going the extra mile. We see it every day, and so do the parents of our children:
"When we walked into Mary Cariola, we knew this was the place for Hannah. We knew she would be given the love and attention she needed to grow to her maximum potential. We feel so blessed that she is here and we wouldn't change it for the world.
She has made tremendous progress. The gains may seem small to some people, but each one means the world to us. The staff has been phenomenal. Their solutions are so unique for each child.
We are proud to send our special angel to Mary Cariola. We are honored to be a part of the Mary Cariola family. It has been a fantastic experience. We can't even imagine where we would be without Mary Cariola."
