Swishes and Swirls Art Project

Art Therapist Sara Corona guided everyone through the artistic process. Penfield students assisted Mary Cariola students with paint color selection and squirting it on the canvas. Once the overlay sheet was placed on top of the paint, everyone had fun rolling basketballs, wheelchairs and walking on the top sheet to create artistic patterns.

The event was more about making memories than making a masterpiece.

“To interact with kids of their own age is wonderful.” explained Kathy Lee. “The art activity allowed everyone to work together and I thought the interactions were really nice. It’s always challenging to get our students in the community due to their complex medical needs so if we don’t bring the world to us we live in an incredibly isolated environment. The Penfield students were really nice to spend part of their day off with us…that says a lot about their character.”

The Kids Miracle Making Club and Penfield Youth Basketball raised over $1,8000 from their annual 3X3 Sunshine Classic Basketball tournament and designated the money to Mary Cariola’s Art Therapy projects. ESL Federal Credit Union offered additional financial support.

Beautiful artwork was created and new friendships made as Mary Cariola Students and Staff welcomed members of Penfield’s Youth Basketball League and the Kids Miracle Making Club for a morning of artistic collaboration.
