By Karen Zandi, Mary Cariola Center President/CEO
In light of multiple concerning issues on both the state and federal level, I understand this is a stressful and unprecedented time for nonprofits, special education, and disability advocacy.
While there are many issues that all non-profits must face, one is extremely bothersome, and hits close to home for Cariola. Rumors from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in creating a “national autism registry" is extremely concerning. To echo the sentiments of many parents, I find this misinformation to be outrageous.
Furthermore, I would like to address the new studies being funded by the Department of Health and Human Services in efforts to find a link between ASD and vaccinations. I am troubled, as these statements are not only scientifically unfounded, but harmful as such narratives perpetuate stigma and disinformation.
I want to reassure you that we are tirelessly working with local and state-level elected officials to ensure the impact of these changes is as minimal as possible for our staff and the people we serve.
We continue to collaborate with the Greater Rochester community and nonprofit organizations, as well as our corporate partners, to make certain we can continue our mission of educating and providing life skill solutions that empower individuals and the families of those with complex disabilities. I am confident that by following our values of integrity, trust, respect and quality focused care, we will be able to continue to transform lives.
