With the holiday season in full swing, Claire shares how to protect yourself from cybersecurity risks while shopping online.

1. Shop Smart

Only buy from trusted sources. It’s best to conduct research on a company and verify if a website is trusted before making a purchase. You can check reviews and primary settings to ensure you are purchasing from a trusted site.

2. Be Wary of Scams

If you received an email from unknown senders or digital advertisements offering deals for the holiday season that seem to be too good to be true, they are most likely scams. Never respond to suspicious emails or click on any links within the emails, as they may direct you to untrusted sources that will gather information. Also, be alert of purchase verification and shipping update text messages. Unless directly advised to you within a confirmation email or on the website, these are most likely phishing attempts.

3. Use a Credit Card, not a Debit Card

Avoid using your debit card for purchases, as this allows for potential access to your checking account. Instead, utilize a credit card where only available credit would be potentially accessed.

4. Stay Private

To protect your information, it is best to conduct online purchases from a private Wi-Fi network, such as a network available at your home. Avoid making purchases on public Wi-Fi networks, such as at a coffee shop or on your cell phone, as your information can be shared across the network.

5. Check your Statements

Make sure to review your statements for your bank and credit cards to ensure all transactions have been authorized. If you notice any suspicious activity or a purchase you did not authorize, it is best to act quickly to remedy the situation.

Online shopping has grown in popularity and is a convenient way to avoid crowds of holiday shoppers. By utilizing these tips, you can feel good that your information is protected during the holiday season and throughout the year.
