Why Localism Matters
Community engagement is about more than showing up. It’s about building connections, creating opportunities, and investing in organizations that make a meaningful difference. As the regional community investments & partnerships manager for Excellus BlueCross BlueShield’s Rochester region, I’m proud to partner with organizations that strengthen our communities every day, including Mary Cariola Center.
As a local nonprofit health plan, Excellus BCBS understands that our responsibility extends beyond providing health coverage. We live here, work here, and raise our families here. The health and well-being of our communities are directly connected to the organizations that support individuals and families every day. That is why community engagement is at the heart of what we do. When local organizations succeed, our communities are stronger and healthier.
Supporting Mary Cariola matters because of the life-changing impact it has every day. Through specialized education, residential, clinical, and community-based services, the organization empowers people with complex disabilities to reach their fullest potential while providing families with the support and resources they need to navigate challenges and celebrate successes together.
A Personal Connection
For me, this partnership is especially meaningful because my connection with Mary Cariola began long before my current role. Prior to my transition to Excellus BCBS, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work for Mary Cariola. I witnessed firsthand the dedication of the staff, the resilience of the students, and the unwavering support provided to families. It was an experience that left an impression on me and continues to influence how I think about community impact today.
What I remember most is the sense of possibility throughout the organization. Success was measured not only by major milestones but also by the small victories that reflected growth, independence, and confidence. I saw educators, therapists, and support professionals go above and beyond to help individuals reach their goals. Their compassion, creativity, and dedication remain some of the most inspiring examples of service I’ve experienced.
One of my fondest memories is witnessing the genuine connections between staff and students during daily arrivals and departures. Morning greetings were filled with warmth, smiles, songs, and conversation, and afternoon farewells offered the individualized encouragement, support, and reassurance that helped each student end their day on a positive note.

Community events and partnerships help make this work possible by raising awareness, building connections, and inspiring involvement in causes that matter. As a local organization, we know meaningful change happens when neighbors support neighbors. Through volunteering, sponsorships, fundraising, and advocacy, every contribution helps strengthen the care networks families rely on.
I’m proud that Excellus BCBS has supported Mary Cariola and the incredible work they have done throughout our region for the past 10 years. Together, through local partnerships and community engagement, we can continue creating opportunities for individuals and families to thrive and build stronger communities for generations to come.
